The Florida Green Lodging Program provides voluntary guidelines for lodging properties to help conserve natural resources and prevent air pollution. Bellasera Hotel has implemented a myriad of environmental procedures, contributing to their first palm recognition. These “green practices” involve a number of recycling and improved energy efficiency, water conservation, and air quality initiatives and programs. Hotel guests and staff have the opportunity to recycle not only glass, plastic, cans, and paper, but also batteries, cell phones, print toners, ink cartridges, fluorescent bulbs, appliances, and computer equipment. For improved energy efficiency, the hotel participates in FPL’s initiative “Sunshine Energy”, an environmental program that produces clean electricity generation. Air handler units are cleaned frequently and utilize energy-efficient programmable thermostats and air filters. Additionally, the Housekeeping and Laundry departments use green cleaning products.

Since making a commitment to green initiatives and earning their first palm in 2008, Bellasera is proud to share that the property now sends 68% more materials to be recycled, resulting in 11% less materials needing to be sent to landfills. Bellasera has recently installed energy efficient lighting throughout the units and parking lot, resulting in a decrease in the expense of electricity by 32%. In addition, Bellasera has improved its water conservation measures through the use of low flow plumbing fixtures and replacing high volume water tanks with on-demand systems. Bellasera has also joined the Adopt a Road program to help reduce countywide litter and raise community awareness. The implementations of these additional green efforts have exponentially increased Bellasera’s positive impact on the environment and local community, earning them their second palm designation.

“When making decisions concerning refurbishments, guest amenities or other purchases, we always consider implementing initiatives that we know will help the environment as a whole,” says General Manager, Brian Schomacker. “We have opened up a dialogue with our guests through our suggestion boxes, comment cards, our linen reuse program, and various recycle opportunities offered to show our guests how serious we take this responsibility. Our open communication and dialogue with our guests also gives them an opportunity to take some of our ideas home with them.”

The Fort Myers Beach Relay for Life event works in conjunction with other local Relay events for the common cause of American Cancer Society fundraising. The Fort Myers Beach Relay for Life is a unique Relay event in that the symbolic “track” where participants will take turns running or walking is located directly on the sand, with the Gulf of Mexico as a beautiful backdrop. This year’s Fort Myers Beach Relay event will end just past sunset, to complement the other larger community events that will follow the traditional overnight format. The theme for the 2015 Fort Myers Beach Relay for Life event is “I Can Survive,” inspired by the 70’s funk musical era. Come join us for this special, all-day event dedicated towards raising money and awareness for a cure!

Many of us have been affected by cancer in some way, whether it was a battle of our own or watching a loved one struggle with this life-threatening disease. According to American Cancer Society research, there will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed and 589,430 deaths from cancer in the U.S. in 2015. Together, we can fight this overwhelming statistic, work toward a cure, and celebrate more birthdays.

The Fort Myers Beach Relay for Life will start its opening ceremony at 12pm. FOX 4 Rising anchors Kelly Dame and Miriam Zamorano will join Relay For Life teams and attendees to kickoff the event, which will start with a Survivor lap, followed by a lap with caregivers joining in, followed by a luncheon to honor Survivors. The day will be filled with live music, dancing, and activities on the beach. The event will end with a Luminaria candle ceremony at sunset, where attendees will honor and celebrate the lives of survivors and remember those lost to cancer.

ABOUT RELAY FOR LIFE

Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society. At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much.

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or other venue. Events are up to 24 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times. The funds raised truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!

The event is a precursor to the annual World Sporting Championships that will take place the following weekend in Palm City, Florida. Competition shooters can warm up for the championships, while novice shooters can shoot recreationally or enjoy one of the nearby Everglades tours and activities. Gulf Coast Clays and Port of the Islands invite out of state, international and local visitors to join for the weekend and enjoy the beauty of the Everglades.

Participants and guests are encouraged to arrive Friday, April 10th to settle in. The event will kick off Saturday morning at Port Of The Islands Everglades Adventure Resort with activities for all ages, including fishing, kayaking, eco tours and more. On Saturday at Gulf Coast Clays, there will be an entry-level 50-bird Sporting Clays competition as well as an additional 50 targets offered for the more competitive participants. There will be $1,000 awarded to the top Lady shooter at this event. Sunday, April 12th will feature a Super Sporting 100-target Registered Sporting Clays shoot. $750 will be awarded to the winner and $500 awarded for the top junior shooter (under age 21). Registration for shooting events also includes a BBQ lunch. Additionally, both Saturday and Sunday will feature a Make A Break and Long Bird competition.
